Man Raises Money to Get Sent Back to Africa

An Indiana man has taken to GoFundMe to raise money for an unconventional reason: he wants to get sent back to Africa.

Larry Mitchell took to the fundraising platform to encourage those who aren’t too keen on Black folks to “#putyourmoneywhereyourhateis.”

“Send me ‘back’ to Africa fund… If you want me to go back to Africa I will gladly go… you can help make your dream and mine come true,” Mitchell wrote. “Excepting [sic] all donations… KKK, Skin Heads and anyone else with like mind thinking are welcome to donate.”

While most likely written in jest, Mitchell’s “back to Africa” campaign isn’t that far-fetched. With the possibility of a Donald Trump presidency looming large, and the frequency of police shootings of Black folks seemingly on the rise, many Black Americans are considering the idea of leaving the U.S. and Africa is a pretty good option.

Though Africa is certainly not one vast country, but rather 50+ nations, many of the world’s fastest growing economies are on the continent. Add to that the power of the U.S. dollar, and the Motherland seems like a wonderful option for those looking to escape a possible Trump administration.

So far Mitchel has only raised $10 towards his $100,000 goal–probably because most view his effort as a joke–but who knows; it might catch on.
