Now, I’m going to be honest, I’ve never been too keen on dolls and Barbies. It has nothing to do with a lack of Black representation or anything. Dolls just never appealed to me. Ok, well I had ONE — and it was only cool because of its educational applications. Hey! Call it the nerd in me, but I learned a lot from that thing…only to later destroy it in a kiddie rage. Ha!
Anywho, growing older and looking at life through the eyes of my six-year-old cousin, Leah, I understand the significance of a doll. If done with purpose, the figures can be inspirational and can reflect the strides women are making in life and career.
Today, Barbie announced that it will honor six “Sheroes” that are breaking boundaries and igniting possibilities for women and young girls across the world.
Included in the collection is filmmaker Ava DuVernay! Also to note, she is the only Black figure among the group.
The women will be presented with a one-of-a-kind doll created in their likeness and will be honored by Barbie at the Variety Power of Women Luncheon in New York City.
Adding to the celebration, following the awards ceremony, the Sheroes will auction off their doll to benefit a charity of their choice.
I have to admit, seeing Ava DuVernay in a Barbie-styled image did spark a genuine feeling of pride. Her work, vision and fearlessness to go forth and tell stories in a way that unites a diverse sea of eyes and ears is commendable, and it is an applauding moment for big and little Brown girls everywhere.
The “Shero” celebration will take place on National #Shero Day, Monday, April 27.
