Branded by its over-the-top storylines and explosive feuds, Empire’s fiery divas take it off screen.
Veteran actress Nia Long joined the third season of Empire as a guest star, however, her alleged demanding behavior put her at war with Empire star Taraji P. Henson who stars as Cookie Lyon.
Apparently, the entire feud started with a joke that was made at Long’s expense because of her chronic lateness and rudeness. An unnamed male co-star asked Long if she was on “Black people’s time,” and in response, Long berated him causing Henson to come to his defense. As a result, one of the biggest feuds between two Black actresses was born and has ended with Empire’s long-standing hair and makeup team filing a complaint against Nia Long for her behavior. Until filming wrapped, both Henson and Long were just “barely civil” to one another.
Though Nia Long’s reps have denied the rumors, neither Taraji P. Henson nor Empire creator Lee Daniels has commented on what was said to have occurred. This is not the first time actresses have been at each other’s throats in Hollywood. Ryan Murphy’s current FX series Feud: Bette and Joan explores the legendary rivalry between Hollywood icons Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) which came to a boiling point in 1961 when the actresses were filming their Academy nominated thriller, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? The feud between the actresses got so intense that they called director Robert Alrich each night to complain about each other. They also went to great lengths to sabotage one another on set.
Rumors of feuds and rivalries run rampant in Hollywood all the time, however, with these new rumors swirling around Nia Long and Taraji P. Henson, we can’t help but recall the infamous feud between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj from their 2013 stint on American Idol. Their vicious fighting got so bad that production for the series was often stalled and it took away much of the spotlight that should have been on the contestants.
Whether Nia Long and Taraji P. Henson get along or not, we’re sure that we are in for some fantastic remaining episodes of Empire, especially since Long’s character Giuliana is a nemesis for Cookie. We are also very much looking forward to the actresses forthcoming projects which include Netflix’s Dear White People for Long and Acrimony for Henson.
Empire airs Wednesday at 10 PM on FOX & Feud: Bette and Joan airs Sundays at 10 PM on FX.
