Apollo Theater To Celebrate Billie Holiday
A powerful voice, an adventurous, but troubled life led on her own terms: Billie Holiday was a force and one of the most influential in the arenas of jazz and blues.
Her melody spoke to truths, both her own and that of society, such as in the chilling “Strange Fruit.”
For her musical contributions, she will join the likes of fellow legends Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Louis Armstrong and various others as an Apollo Walk of Fame inductee on April 6.
Adding to this honor, the legendary Apollo Theater has partnered with Absolutely Live Entertainment to celebrate the Billie Holiday’s 100th birthday.
The birthday celebration will consists of a tribute concert headlined by vocalist Cassandra Wilson, on April 10.
Said Mikki Shepherd, executive producer of Apollo Theater:
“It is an honor to celebrate Billie Holiday and her many contributions to the jazz and blues world, on her centennial birthday … The Walk of Fame is our way of paying tribute to the Apollo Legends who have transformed the American entertainment landscape. Billie Holiday without a doubt is the personification of this. Her voice and presence permeated mainstream culture which lead to her becoming the most influential jazz singer of her day and among the most esteemed vocalist of the century. These initiatives serve as part of the Apollo’s mission to use its legacy to inform and support contemporary artists.”
