Amandla Stenberg and Her Badass Girls!
Amandla Stenberg is quickly becoming an active voice for her generation.
The 16-year-old provides a refreshing approach to the ills of society. From attacks on her character in the Hunger Games‘ film trilogy, to cultural appropriation and addressing the misrepresentation of women, the actress and social activist is planting an inspiring seed.
Adding to her list of amazing accomplishments, The Huffington Post reports that Amandla is using her creative skills to construct a comic book that centers around the experiences of Niobe Ayutami, a young Black woman, who is half elf and half human warrior.
The comic, titled “NIOBE: She is Life,” follows the protagonist warrior on her mission to save the world. Bringing a relatable presence to the character, Niobe’s quest also embarks on the journey of self-discovery and the limits of her powerful prowess.
Amandla’s creation comes at a time where diversity in the comic world is few and far in between, especially when referencing the presence of women.
Stenberg expressed in a statement how she identifies with Niobe and why she was drawn to co-write her story.
“Her journey is my journey. I connect to her mixed racial background and quest to discover her innate powers and strengths. There’s never been a character quite like her – one who shatters the traditional ideal of what a hero is. We need more badass girls!”
Vocally and creatively curating a space that encourages more young people to speak their minds on issues that matter to them, Amandla Stenberg is on a path to divine greatness.
“NIOBE: She is Life” is expected to be released on November 4 in partnership with Stranger Comics.
