African Diaspora International Film Festival

Idris Elba, Epatha Merkerson and Sonia Sanchez are only a few names making a leading appearance in the 23rd annual African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York.

The line-up, which features 57 films from 27 countries, kicked off Friday and tackles the human experience of people of color from diverse perspectives.

Opening night led with The Man Who Mends Women, The Wrath of Hippocrates by Thierry Michel and the premiere of Julien’s Bed, a film about an African American in Paris trying to reconnect with his lover. Shadow & Act describes the film as being “imaginative” with a “poetic story line.”

Chicago also has two films in its honor being screened in New York: 70 Acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green by Ronit Bezale and Takin’ Place by Cyrus Dowlatshahi.

Our man, Idris Elba stars in Debbie Tucker’s Second Coming about a man whose peaceful marriage takes an unexpected turn due to circumstances. Catch BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez on closing night!

To make this experience even more of a stand-out, 21 of the films are directed by women.
