60 Years of Curtis Mayfield
Soul singer Curtis Mayfield may have passed on, but his music lives on forever. Now, fans will have a chance to celebrate his legacy with new recordings, merchandise, DVDs and a documentary in honor of the entertainer’s 60th anniversary next year.
“It’s time to re-evaluate his legacy, to let him touch people’s hearts again,” Mayfield’s widow Altheida told Billboard. “But we’re doing it the way Curtis would have liked it done.”
Mayfield passed away in 1999. Since then, his family has been poring through his massive cache of material at his Atlanta home studio. The relatives also have searched through his universal catalog, which reaches as far away as South Africa.
Here’s what Mayfield’s estate has planned for the 2016 release:
-digitizing and repackaging several Mayfield classics from original master recordings
-DVDs featuring video footage of concerts and interviews
-The announcement of details regarding a documentary and feature film based on the artist’s life
A new website documenting Mayfield’s life and legacy is already up and running. CurtisMayfield.com features details about the singer, songwriter, producer and social activist that many might not be aware of. The family also has a line of T-shirts, posters and other merchandise planned for a June 3 release to coincide with the legend’s birthday.
“We want to keep his name alive,” says his son Kirk. “A lot of people appreciate his music and want to learn more about him.”
Enjoy this classic Mayfield hit while we wait.
